Pherther-Grams

twowheelstothere

The mid-May weekend was looking decent, so Surtch Pherther, jonesing for a desert rip, would hit dirt again. He’d aimed to dark-wander with good tunes and smoke, but ride-tired and for the week’s work and a nightfall chill, was fine turning in early to breeze on the fly and nothin’ otherwise. The next morn, he tracked dawn up a near, near-familiar ridge for fossil-hunting and a sudden snake-watch after a biggun rattled itself know, and then throttled off for fuel, food, and a Bud at a state-line oasis, where he met two dudes who’d cycle-slogged two-hundred-fifty-ish miles through downpours and desert heat just to carve a glacier.

“Howdy!” to Experimental Ghost Adam and to Daily Biker Dan

Published on April 2, 2015 by admin 10 Comments

A co-worker of mine often asks me for “sophisticated, wild-assed” guesses on work-related matters, and the results he receives are always more wild-assed than sophisticated…

Surtch Pherther at Two Wheels To There: A motorcycle blog by Ry Austin

A while back The Experimental Ghost presented a contest in his blog post Shall We Play A Game, challenging his readers to guess his name, which had been shrouded in mystery along with his visage, which remains shrouded in his helmet. As an incentive for the correct guess, Ghost offered a mighty fine, motorcycle-themed bounty from his pal Dan at Daily Bikers.

Reluctant to participate (as I revere the liberating ways of pseudonyms, alter egos, and third person protagonists), I was content to simply observe the goings-on. Well, for a while I was content. Ultimately, I relented–tossing my hat into the ring, analyzing the clues I found…

As with my workplace guesses, my guess of “Adam” was far more wild-assed than sophisticated, for I altogether missed The Ghost’s most informative clue, hidden in the link for the one and only photograph in the post. (D’oh!)

Thanks again, Adam, for the bit of fun that your contest generated for observers and participants alike. And thank you, Daily Bikers, for the delightful, motorcycle-themed goodies: They’ll be enjoyed by me and by the other bike-lovers in my life.

Oh, and as for the Australian Motorcyclist magazine that you sneaked into the parcel: There’s nothing like such glossy publications to feed one’s dreams of riding exotic locations, so thank you, Adam… Yeah, thanks a lot. 😉

Cheers,
Ry Austin

My pleasure Ry and thank you for having a stab.

As for my visage; that’s hidden for a very good reason: I don’t want to frighten my followers 🙂

Have a great and safe Easter

    Cheers

Cheers Ry! It’s quite a buzz to see my stuff in surrounds where they look totally at home. Enjoy my good man and happy Easter!

Set among some of my out-and-about gatherings and ghost town treasures seemed appropriate for such symbols of adventure and discovery…

      Happy Easter, Dan!

So what was the clue in the pictures?

There were three clues in total. The clue “IN” the picture was some Roman Numerals. I’ll let Ry explain the rest if he chooses to.

Clueless?… Ah, you’re in good company here, Richard.

The clue on which I based my wild-assed guess was, of course, Ghost’s Sistine Chapel reference. Everything else I went on were coincidental non-clues.

From The Experimental Ghost’s follow-up post, the other informative clue was the text in the broken link to the photo in his post, which detailed his name’s construction and at which end of the alphabet its letters could be found. The accidental clue (if I understood correctly) was the Roman numerals’ on the card in the photo coinciding with Biblical Adam’s presumed age at his death… What a coincidence–sorta’ weird and spooky.

By the way, thanks for dropping in, Richard. 🙂

I saw the 930 but it didn’t mean anything to me. And was just annoyed at the broken link but didn’t look at the text. Great job figuring it out!
